I know Peco Code 55 is really Code 80 that is placed deeper into the ties to give the 55 look. I was just wondering if Peco Code 55 will conect directly with Atlas Code 55? Or would some type of adapter track have to be used.
What is the best chocie of under table switch machine to use with code 55? Most of the switch machines would be located at a normal depth but two would be located further down. So I would need one that could be easily modified to reach further upward.
Not only they don’t fit together, they don’t look alike at all.Not even closely to my eye.Peco trackage is based on Brittish prototype while Atlas is based on U.S. prototype so tie spacing for one is different.I’ve opted for Peco for their better choice of turnouts but do find Atlas C55 much better looking.I wouldn’t shy from using either but not on the same layout…but that’s me.
Powering the turnouts is an area where Peco wins again.Simply attach a PL-10 Twincoil that they’re designed for and that’s all. That simple. And if you really want to have the motors buried deeper, then Tortoise’s are a very nice choice.Simply remove the stop spring from the Peco’s and adapt your slow motion motor.More work though, but an outstanding option.
Jacktal’s right, they don’t mix mate. PL10 will fit straight on to code 55 pointwork, but the PL10E gives an extended reach of nearly 2" with the centre lugs bent flat each side of the pin and the other 4 bent out, you’ll need a slot about ½ x ¼" in the road-bed below the tie-bar hole. We have brass washers I call cup washers that cover the lugs when screwed in place. Oh ye wire the motors first, unless you can turn the board over, makes life a lot easier.
You can mate the Peco 55 to Atlas 55 by filing the lower web off of the Peco track base. Once the lower web is removed the second web pretty much lines up with Atlas 55 rail height. You still need to shim the Atlas track because the Peco ties are taller.
