code 83 noise

I have been a code 100 fan for years but have recently built a layout with code 83. Does anyone else find that the track sounds louder when the engines are running. especially when running over the joints.

What are you using for roadbed and subroadbed? I have been using homasote but have just started using Homabed roadbed on top of homasote subroadbed, my hope is that it becomes even quieter time will tell.

Nope, no difference, but if you run equipment with flanges bigger than RP-25 wheels, they can hit the spike head details. Code 83 is also easier to bend than 100, make sure you didn’t push anything out of alignment at the joints, especially if you fasten the track down with nails. If you used flex track, did you file the cut ends? Even when using a tool like the Xuron rail nipper, a little touchup with a small file is usually needed to make a perfect joint. Sight along the rail and see if the inner surfaces line up. Run your finger over the joint and see if the top surfaces line up. Either one fo these being off will cause noise at the joint.

If you have very old AHM or Rivarossi engines, my guess is deep flanges hitting the molded spike heads or perhaps the rail joiners. Lightly put your finger on an engine as it rolls over the joint and you might feel it try to rise up.

I’ve noticed no difference at all in the noise level between code 100 and code 83 when using similar roadbed and construction techniques on two different layouts.
