Cody’s Workshop: Episode 22 - Layering backdrops

Hi Cody! I enjoyed the show especially about making the photo-backdrops! Do you attach the photo-backdrop to the backdrop itself or leave it free standing? Thanks!

Great video Cody on backdrop layering, that is an ingenious way to add depth to a narrow shelf railroad layout and one that I will be using on a street scene soon. Thanks for the tips.

Cody, I assume you used double - sided foam tape to stick the building to the backdrop ?

Should have paid attention - spray adhesive ! My mistake, sorry… Thanks for another great video.

Terrific video,

Cody, How would you create sidewalks?

Thanks

Do you know of anyone who has any articles/info on installing sound decoders in an N Scale Intermountain Tunnel Motor? or even non-sound decoders? I have a string of PFE reefers that need a appropriate power consist.

Question for you concerning Reefer operation, particularly during the Mechanical Reefer era. Do you know of any good articles or books concerning this? Examples would be loading/unloading locations, building types, track plans, facilities for refueling the diesel generators, etc.

Thank you for the videos. Can a future topic be a discussion of adjusting coupler height on a locomotive? Thank you

Hello Cody,

I just put together my first Woodland Scenics straight module. Since I want the layout to be portable how do I hook up the DCC wiring to go from module to module using plug ins for the main power lines>

Cody,
I have been buying all of my rolling stock used, so all of the cars have the old style couplers. I have been installing the knuckle couplers, but they constantly disconnect. All are the same height, but it appears they are not locking in place. Do you have any advice, or a brand you would recommend that would eliminate this issue?

When attaching paper to foam core be aware that if the paper comes from a humid environment, it should be dried first. If not dry the paper will shrink after a period of time and cause the foam core to warp.

Nice! I appreciated the tips on using foam board backing for “layered” scenes. As far as the hole punch - you find the darndest uses for tools. I sure looks like it does the job.

thanks Cody for a good backdrop segment. For economy however, I scan portions of the backdrop using my scanner (all in one printer scanner will work too. Then using photo software I can change a bit of the building to look a bit different. Then print on your printer or take the new file to the printing store. Mount as per you video instructions. This way you still have your original backdrop plus a new slightly different looking building for the 3D section.

Disappointed in this one. When I read multiple layers of printed backdrop to give a better sense of depth i expected more than just one building on foam board. not just one then putting a plastic structure in front of it.

This is for whomever works with tools Cody Grivno uses in his workshop…
How can we access the source for the tools that Cody uses in his How-To and Workshop segments.
Tools like: Sand sticks which I’d like to buy.
I know MicroMark is a usual suspect but I can’t find them there…not sure about Walther’s.

Hi Cody,
How did you mount the last building that you cut out showing the specialty nippers? Was it placed on form board or attached directly to the backdrop with spray contact cement?

Also, do you know, or have you heard how the good contact cement works in the long run? I’ve seen some layouts where the buildings start pulling away from the backdrop and sometimes start curling on the edges after a time. I know that they might have used inferior cement but do we have to worry long term even with the good stuff?

With the Radical Flats, it is recommended that we use black gator board which is much tougher to cut than regular foam board. Have you used this type of backing? If so, how would you recommend that we cut it?

Thanks, Andy K.

The display cabinets behind you, are the trains sitting on track or grooves cut in the shelf or nothing?
