Looking for ideas for color of ground cover around industries, lumber yards, loading docks etc…Has anyone ever tried using Woodland Scenics Yellow Grass as it looks like dried out soil in their catalogue or is it better to use one of theie fine ballast materials instead …Any suggstions would be appreciated
Hi There.
I like to use a mixture of both, the dry “burnt grass” and the earth or soil colours from WS.I also will throw in some grey ballast as most loading docks I’ve really looked at tended to be gravel covered at one point then the grasses would grow into it and tend to look dead with all the trampling and running over of it by vehicles and railway equipment.I find the colours in the WS catalogue look worse than they do in person. They are abit harder to find up here in Canada, but Accurails “Sunlit Vistas” series of ground foam and vegitation work well also. Of coarse alot of guys here will prbably tell you to sift real dirt onto the area as well, which also will look good in this application. Hope this helps.

I use a variaty of Woodland Scenics materials.
Around my steel mill I used a mix of fine iron ore, brown, dark brown, and cinder ballast:
For my grist mill, I used a mix of fine iron ore and brown ballast around the buildings, and Burnt Grass and Earth coarse ground foam on the sloping areas:
And around these interchange tracks, I used fine brown, dark brown and cinder ballast next to the tracks, and Medium Green, Light Green, Burnt Grass, and Yellow Grass coarse ground foam:
