Colorado Narrow Gauge Railroading

I am preparing to visit Colorado for the second time, I plan to revisit the Durango and Silverton train as well as the Cumbres and Toltec; does anyone have any insight as to how to get to a favorable photo location to photograph the D & S train at the location where the track is on a “shelf” on the cliff high above the Animas River, I’m interested in photographing it at both track elevation and at river elevation. Any other suggestions as to what and where to see or photograph would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m assuming you’re referring to the “High Line”, which is at milepost 469.5. I suspect the nearest place you can get by car would be Rockwood, at milepost 469.1. I don’t know but I’m guessing there should be some sort of trail from Rockwood to a vantage point above the High Line. Maybe someone else has more detailed info, but lacking anything better I’d go to Rockwood and ask around.

Regarding the C&T, you might be interested in reading my post regarding our trip there this year. I originally posted it on the Coffee Shop thread on the Model Railroader General forum, but since that’s a real long thread, it’s easier to locate the version I posted on another website forum using this link:
