I went to my hobby space, setup shop for two kitbashings after being inspired by a MRR issue I read a few months back with a great article on using colored pencils for realistic brick, only to discover I couldnt find the article anymore!
Can some one jar my memory with the issue & page number please?
And if not, anyone have a good description of the technique?
There was also an article entitled “Brick wall decals” in the December, 2001 MR. It dealt with using a computer to reproduce the color of a brick wall.
The February 2007 MR had an article on finishing brick buildings using colored pencils.
Has anyone tried this? How well did it work? When I read the article I thought it was a neat and easy way to get the brick color over the mortar, but I had my doubts as to how realistic the final product would turn out.
John Pitts uses colored pencils on his brickwork. Ihave John’s permission to post these. See the full sized ones and lots of other RR reference shots here.
John soaks his pencils in vinegar to soften up the “lead” and just rubs them on. Of course that’s like saying a sculptor takes a slab of granite and removes everything that not his vision, but it’s a start.
That’s some good work on those structures. So let me get this straight. Soak coloured pencil crayonrs in vinigar to soften the lead and then just “colour” the bricks like we did when we coloured in our colouring books as kids? I have lots of coloured pencils. Any brands better than others? Colours? should the building be sprayed the colour of the mortar first or is that rubbed on later using a chauk or plaster?
I’ve got shelves full of past issues of MRR so I’ll have to find that issue.
Has anyone done this with N-Scale? Love to see some pics of that.
