Colors of Athearn Amtrak

Hey all,

Repainting some old Athearn passenger cars. Stripped the paint and ready to add a primer and coat of paint. I tested the color on another car trying to match it to my current amtrak athearn fleet. The color was ATSF Silver and the color was not even close to the others. Any ideas on how to get an as close as possible color to these? The pic below shoyld offer what i’m looking to get close to. thanks!

Your picture is a bit shiney/bright.

Matching colors on-screen can be difficult. If you don’t have an LHS or your LHS doesn’t have a full color chart for the brand(s) they carry, have you tried the color charts at various sites. Walthers has color charts for some brands of paints and some, if not most manufacturers have a chart at their website. Because you are doing it on-screen, you will have to go with the “best” close you can get.

Good luck,

Richard

Hello LakeErieExpress,

Not trying to twist your request, but have you considered metalizing all of your Amtrak units to give them a realistic stainless steel appearance?

Hit up your locar Auto Part store and check out the “Chrome” colored paint. it is a silver made out of a superfine metal flake that does a really good job of mimicing brushed stainless. I found it a pretty good fill in for bare stainless and bare aluminum as well. The Blue is a mix between Santa Fe Blue and Blue Angel Blue, neither are exact but both are close. White and red are just basic white and red nothing special there

Most model makers do not use “regular” paints that we can buy at the LHS. Best bet is to take a car in and choose a color that is the best match (compare to the color you see at the bottom of the bottle as this is where the pigment settles while sitting in the display rack). Polly S Stainless Steel is a color I have had good success with in matching Walthers passenger car colors.

Or take the previous suggestion “plate” the car with some of the (air brushable) finishes out there.
