It’s just occured to me…
Does anyone add colour to the mix when diluting the glue they use for holding down ballast… I’ve just never thought of this before… but it seems so obvious when we put colour into plaster for “earth” etc.

When I put the ballast down, I’ll want the glue to dry clear…For me, it’s the last scenic feature to be installed so anything that May show though is already colored.

You could, but I wouldn’t. Airbrushing is more realistic way to weather the ballast.

im pretty sure you can color it with Ritt clothes dye.that is if you all are still using a white that dries clear ill have to try it as im wanting dark ballast around mt repair shop and turntable…
i think remember success with this from years back. and i also find many ritt colors in my unpacking of my trains
getting the right mix will be the trial and error part . so test will be needed.
I’ve tried it to a limited extent, and like it. Results may depend on the color and brand of ballast you are using.
The glue dries clear, and so I never thought of it.

Sure, I always do this! I just mix in enuf Polly S “Earth” with the Woodland Scenics MM to make it look like light chocolate milk, and apply it as normal. Does a nice job of “instant weathering” and really blends things together. Try it, you’ll like it![:)]
