Columbia Basin Railroad delivers first unit train to Pacific Coast Canola
Knowing that Moses Lake is northeast of Yakima, I figure the Port of Warden is on the Columbia River or one of its tributaries.
The Port of Warden is NOT on any waterway. It is in the middle of the Columbia Basin semidesert retion, but has no water access to the Columbia River. A number of towns in Central and Eastern Washington have port districts, which handle local airports and local industrial projects. Warden is the next town up the road from Othello, which once was the eastern terminus of the Milwaukee Road’s Pacific electrification district. (I worked as a radio news reporter and weekly newspaper editor editor further south, in the Yakima Valley).
Since CBR serves Othello, WA, at least part of it is ex-MILW.
Anyone know what kind of cars they haul the canola in? Having harvested the seed, I know it is extremely heavy. A full load of canola would break the axels of a ‘normal’ grain hopper!
Sorry. I meant to type “axle”. I had a dog named Axel and automatically typed it that way. My bad.
Correction 50-60 lbs per bushel not 600, typo.
Canola (rapeseed) weighs 50-600 lbs per bushel, which is anot the same as wheat at average 60 lbs per bushel; canola moves in covered grain hoppers.
Yahoo, more trains for our State, thanks Columbia Basin RR.
The Columbia Basin Railway operates former NP trackage north from Connell through Warden to Moses Lake, with a branch to Schrag. It also operates the former MILW main line between Warden and Othello, with some additional MILW trackage near Moses Lake. There has been talk of the state DOT restoring service to the section of MIlW between Othello and Royal City, with CBRW operating it.
The port of Warden is not on the Columbia river. It is south of Moses Lake. The Columbia is west of the town. Sorry, no tributaries, just desert for miles & miles. However I am glad that more trains(and more industry) are coming to Washington state. The Democrat controlled legislature in this state has spent everything we had and they want to keep raising our taxes. Sure makes it hard for new industry to get started here.
