combat railfans

Anyone here a member? I am in Tucson and it sounds like a fun group. Pls let me know if any members here and how to meet.

Ok Ill bite just what is a combat railfan? We talking like the old days of the army’s rail battalions? or…

When I’m out using the big lenses, they sometimes get mistaken as bazookas or mountain howitzers. Does that count?

The ‘Combat Railfans of Arizona’ used to be quite active on the rec.rails newsgroup. There is a web page for them, but it has been ‘stale’ for years:

They seem to have parties out in the desert by the SP mainline and shoot off sky rockets! Since I do not look at newsgroups now, I have not kept up on their antics.

Their camp is located on the west side of Maricopa Hill, between Bosque and Shawmut, AZ. Cactus, curves, and snakes. Google them. Plenty of postings. Tell Mel and PA I said hi.

…I certainly have no idea what this group does…?? Looking at the pic supplied at the link, I still am confused. Guess it doesn’t matter much not being out west.

I have a story about a time that I was taking photos from a bridge and got 3 squad cars on my back. But that story’s for another time, I have to go to work now [:)]

not sure how to post, trying to reach combat railfans or a member of combat railfans

I’m still looking too. Where is everybody, jail?

They were stuffed into white autoracks and sent to Beech Grove.

I believe the instument you refer to is the bouzouki, a Greek instrument also adopted by the Irish for Celtic folk music.

The combat railfans are alive and well. We will be having a large Octoberfest this weekend Oct. 18th if in the Phoenix area. Our website is outdated but you can find our page on FB. We still have great parties trackside and exploring the rails of Arizona.
