Has anybody been able to run an analog loco with they’re nce power cab on they’re dcc layout while running another loco that is dcc?
Just asking, as I got the word today that one of my favorite steam engines that is analog cannot be converted due to its small size and construction…hummph.
What is the loco that can not be converted? IMO there is no loco that cannot be converted. I have done everything from expensive brass using dual decoders to old Tyco that was not really worth doing but the customer wanted it. I am not a professional just a hobbyist that likes stuffing electronic things in little places.
NO, you cannot run a DC loco with the NCE system –
If you still have a DC power pack, you can disconnect the NCE system and use that to run the DC loco, but not at the same time as a DCC loco. And you should take all of the DCC locos off the track.
As others have already stated, NCE does not support DC. That’s a decision that they made from the get-go. The only systems that I know that will operate both DCC and one (1) DC address is Bachmann and Digitrax.
If a HO-scale decoder won’t fit in the tender of your 0-6-0 switcher, a N- or Z-scale decoder probably will. I put a Z-scale Digitrax decoder in my Proto 2000 S1 switcher (w/o modifying the chassis) and I bet that has even less room than your 0-6-0.
Again, one has put a non sound decoder in this loco and one put sound in the tender for the same loco in the Bachmann forums. You will find facts and photos with a video if you go look.
The Bachmann 0-6-0 also comes in a Bachmann DCC OnBoard speed-lights-direction built in decoder that doesn’t smoke.
So obviously it can support a decoder, even if it cannot support a smoke unit too. I would not use the smoke unit anyway as the smoke leaves an oily residue on the tracks disrupting electrical connection.
As mentioned, you can use a smaller N scale or possibly a Z scale decoder in place of the larger sized HO decoder and it will run if it fits better.
Also the only DCC system that runs a DC loco as mentioned is the Bachmann EZ Command DCC system and the Digitrax systems that I know of. The EZ you still need to connect a DC transformer to the DCC controller to run the DC loco. They make a specific model DC transformer that works with the EZ C.
If you do not have the skills, by a good 0-6-0 with DCC, no sound or a 0-6-0 with sound. Your choice.
Look in this nearby thread.
0-6-0 dcc but what about sound
The ones in the Bachmann forum did the Bachmann 0-6-0 as a challenge as Bachmann has somewhat improved the loco drive itself but you still have to improve the tender pickups. The smoke unit is removed for more weight. Smoke is ony for children anyway and gets messy after a while.
I have looked at the Bachmann loco diagrams and the drive is not the older pancake motor which I have had a gave away.
Apparently Bachmann IS comingout with a version that will smoke as well, but it is only by advanced reservations. That means it will be produced at some way in the future date, ro nto at all, LOL.
