The fronts of the streamlined diesel locomotives in the illustration are adorned with the Capitol mark of the B&O on the left and the Keystone Herald of the PRR on the right.
Notable about this model is that the brake handle was painted. Other clues that suggest its release date are that the body height is standard for the Blue Box, the coupler is a horn hook type, the assembly manual lists Athearn’s former location, and the attached promotional postcard from MR magazine features the cover of the magazine’s February 1997 issue.
In 2012, the shop’s 75th anniversary, it was run by 82-year-old Bob Mehler. He was a teenager when he started working at the variety store that his mother Esther opened in 1938. The shop was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan on September 17, 2004, but reopened two weeks before Christmas that year.
According to a local TV station (pictured), the store was robbed twice in November 2020, with about $5,000 worth of merchandise stolen. In any case, it’s good that the 90-year-old owner is safe. The interior of the store appears to have been undamaged. It could be said that the news coverage made it a good commercial, but it was during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The club name can be found in MR magazine from the May 1966 issue to the December 1996 issue. The floorboard and trucks were replaced with Athearn products.
I’m old and not real smart. I’m having trouble figuring out what that emblem is supposed to be. To me, it’s just a red and white blob – one of those pictures you have to squint to see the image. All I see is a cloud on a red background.
To me, the black parts look like an old lantern. It’s the red and white part that threw me. I think it might just be like you said, a reflection in the red lens of the light.
