Comments, Counsel, Critique and Criticisms sought and welcomed

Hello Gang;

After a brief hiatus we got the roadbed down and the landscape scenery done on the middle peninsula of the layout. There are still some buildings to be added here - stock pens, windmill, water tank and county co op building etc. - but otherwise the area is basically done.

This is the first scenery work I’ve ever done and I am looking to hear back any opinions good or bad. Feedback from my peers is the greatest and most informative guide there is so please feel free to give any you have - not just looking for “atta boy” here, although they are always nice.[:)]

The area depicted is a stock pen spur on the old AT&SF line in northeastern Arizona near Pinta Az.

To save space on the forums I have created a photo album for the pictures at:

Thanks in advance for your time and comments.

Peace.

I think this is the only layout I’ve ever seen without tracks or trains.

Say hi to OL and have let me know how she’s doing.

it’s looking good .

i don’t know if it’s a lighting thing , or a camera thing , but it seems very yellow

also needs a bit of vegetation , although i’m not familiar with the area you’re modelling , my memories of arizona are greener than what you’ve done so far

Chip;

Just for you man! [;)]

Peace.

p.s. The OL says Hi and that she’ll shoot you an email.

I like the close up of the roadbed that has the Walthers & other brands kits “skyline”!

The dirt road beside the track looks great. Can’t count how many miles I’ve driven down desolate roads like that.

It could just be the photo lighting, but I think a couple of the “outcropping” rocks are a little too red.

Apart from the colours, which possibly are due to the lighting or the camera’s white balance I reckon you’re creating a really good impression of the wide open spaces. I think it’s going to look great[tup]

Thanks for all the input guys;

It means a lot to me. The comments and points made by your peers are always valuable in grounding you back at center. I know that sometimes working alone, even with the OL’s feedback, I can loose focus on the bigger picture - particularly when working in such a small world to begin with. [:)]

I have tried to adjust the whiteness settings on the camera and started repainting the rocks. Many people pointed out that the rocks looked off, and stepping back and looking again after hearing that made me see they were indeed -far- too red and out of place. So armed with some new pictures of the area and some good advice I set out to repaint them… Let me tell you there is nothing more tedious that trying to clean plaster rocks of paint… after an evenings work I got three cleaned and repainted.

Here are some pictures of the new paint job on the rocks and with the new camera adjustments. What do you all think?

Thanks again for all the good input.

Peace.

Admittedly I’ve never been anywhere near the area you’re modelling, but I’d say there’s a definite improvement in the colours.

I love the way your rocks emerge from below the surface, and the detailing and areas of rubble are first rate .

Ok, I have to say it, VERY nice work! You’ve got a great eye for scenery that I can only envy.

Now with that out of the way, how about some dead brush?? I used some buff colored lichen on a desert theme layout I did a few years ago and it was very effective at modeling dead bushes.

Oh yeah, you forgot the coyotes.

I like that, and by the way… I have riden on Santa Fe RY in 1950’s in AZ. Long live the war bonnet!

Much better. For a while I thought the rocks had come from Oklahoma.

Track it and run trains damn it! [(-D]

Dont get so caught up in the scenery that you might find yourself cutting a path for your trains if and when they actually run.

I like what you have done this far. Oh by the way the sun is a tad hot on that beer car there is going to be a claims form sent for “Evaporation” he he.
