comments on my weathering. (pics) (updated 7-21)

Take a look at these and what do you think I could do better??

The gondola looks great, can’t really say about the hopper perhaps the lighting is wrong.

I agree with Joey, Don’t know what to suggest. What are you hauling in the gondola? Mike

Scrap metal.

From what i can see, looks great! i wouldn’t change any of what you’ve done.

Both models look great dekruif!

Wonderful work[:)]

Theyboth look excellent, well done.

All I can suggest is that you add a bit more to the trucks on the hopper, they look a little too clean for the rest of the car.

One more thing you could that forgot to mention is to dirty the front and backs of the hopper (where the braking system is etc…) They lookas if they are not weathered!

Looks pretty good. There are a couple of things I would do differently though. If you are going to take time to weather a car, add metal wheels. If you look at real railcars the faces of the wheels are all rusty, but the part of the wheel that rolls on the rails is nice and shiny. You can simply rust up the wheel faces of your metal wheels and it will look much more realistic, plus the metal wheels roll much better.

Like somebody else mentioned (I would know who if I could see all the posts while typing…) you should weather the ends of the covered hopper. The rust you have on there looks pretty good but would be a little better if you thinned the paint just a bit more. Use a couple of coats and you can see through the rust better, what you have just looks a little too opaque to me.

Also I think you need a lot more rust on the roof of the covered hopper, what I like to do is mix up a couple dabs of burnt umber, raw umber and burnt sienna opaque watercolor. Then dab a cosmetic sponge on the paint and touch the sponge on paper until it doesnt leave too much paint behind. Then dab the sponge on the top of the car and it has an awesome effect of flaking paint with the exposed metal rusting. You can also do this on the sides of a car and it will mostly show up on the ribs as if the paint had been rubbed off. The great thing about this is if you dont like it you can wipe it right off with a wet paper towel. But make sure to seal it with dullcote.

Overall I think your cars look pretty good, nice job.

I haven’t weathered the trucks or the ends either, but I plan too.

Are you sure that covered hopper isn’t real? [:P] Nice work!

They both look great…what did you use on the gondola trucks? Again, great job.

Guy

I used paint and then put chalk on the WET paint(preferably rust colored). then while the paint is still wet you take a stiff bristled brush and PUSH the chalk into the paint.

What is “positive criticism?”

I will agree, the gondola looks pretty good. I can’t tell completely though. The pictures are a bit fuzzy. If you are using a digital camera, are you using the “macro” setting?

I’m not so sure about the covered hopper, however. The rust looks too much like brush strokes, and also looks a bit heavy.

Matt

I redid the covered hopper cause I didn’t like the look.

VAST improvement! Still a few flaws, but for an early attempt, it’s understandable. One thing that jumps out at me is the inconsistantcy of Side A compared to Side B. It happens prototypically, but perhaps not as much as this. However, I wouldn’t change it, just keep it in mind on future projects.

Keep at it, and don’t be afraid of criticism. I was at first, and it nearly stopped me from weathering.

Matt

Love it, great job overall, you’ve got some tallent! Two things I’d suggest if you’d want to but it’s totally optional: First, on the covered hopper, most of the covered hoppers I’ve seen on food/grain services have small plants growing out of their running boards (at least in spring through fall) which can be modeled easily with a variety of lichens and such depending on what you’re car is carrying. Second: the scrap metal in the covered hopper looks a little too new to me, maybe a wash with a very doluted black would work well to make it look a bit worn. By the way what’s the scrap made out of it’s got a nice look, is that tin foil? Cheeers! ~METRO

uspscsx:

The reason side A and side B are so different is because i’ve applied dullcote on one side and not the other. Once you apply chalk on dullcote is sticks alot better.

METRO:

The scarp metal is made of tinfoil. Oh and it’s a chemical car so I don’t think there wold be any weeds on it.[:D]

They look good! I am also trying my hand at weathering my rolling stock and would like to pick up some tips from the experts.

Personally I think you did a very good job on them [:)]
