I just noticed the “new” Spectrum ATSF 2-10-4s are shipping. “New” is in quotes as these are - from what I can tell - upgraded reissues of the Bachmann 2-10-4 issued back in the early '80s. The new ones are DCC equipped w/o sound.
Has anyone seen a review of these? Anyone had any exposure to them?
The Bachmann Texas type looks like the same boiler size and length from the Northern. and that is not correct for this locomotive. Overall, it looks like a smaller version of the 5011 class locomotive, about 95% of the correct size except for the tender, which is the same as the Northern overall.
To be fair, this version is a little more correct than the Texas Chugger they offered about twenty years ago because that model pulled a NYC centipede tender. So much for detail.
I had one of the Texas Chuggers back in the '80s and for the money it was just fine - especially since there was nothing comparable out there that I could afford then. It has since been sold on Ebay and replaced with a BLI.
As the BLI only comes in one number (the initial loco), these could be some decent alternatives but obviously I am a bit skeptical.
