COMMUNICATING ON FORUM

I WAS LOOKING AT A PHOTO ON NOVEMBERS ‘SHOW ME SOMETHING’. IT WAS A PICTURE OF THE LAKER MILWAUKEE TIED UP AT DOCK. I USED THE REPLY BUTTON WITH THE SAID PICTURE TO ASK ABOUT IT.

THAT POSTED MY QUESTION SOME FRAMES REMOVED FROM THE PICTURE, AND SINCE I HAVE HAD A BARRAGE OF 8 LITTLE-RELATED EMAILS FROM AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM VIA NOREPLY@TRAINS.COM. HOTMAIL WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO REPLY TO ANY OF THE EMAILS TO STOP THEM. ANY HELPFUL THOUGHTS?

When you posted your reply did you happen the checkmark the ‘Email me replies to this post’ box before clicking 'Post?" Make sure that box is unchecked before you post and you won’t get the emails.

One helpful tip is to not use all caps. People may think you’re shouting.

Yes, take your caps lock key off…

Yes, internet manners is don’t post in all caps; it has the effect of shouting. Please don’t post in all caps.

Thank you.

I dunno…I heard the first guy, but the restuvya will hafta speak up. [:-^][(-D]

WHAAAAAAT DID YOU SAY!!!

I think we all got the point, we are getting [#offtopic]! Let’s all be polite, use our manners, and get back on topic.

First, [#welcome] to the forums!!![:D]

Now, to answer your question: I presume your post still have to be moderated, so when you post it will send you an email when it is reviewed and posted. There is a shortage of moderators currently, so your post will take some time to show up, and you might be under moderation for awhile if you don’t PM Steven Otte after about 10 post if the moderation is still on (My first 80 post had to be moderated due to this little problem). Also make sure the box at the bottom is unchecked.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen!

He should be [#welcome] 'd first!!!

The OP is a new guy, and here youall just lambaste him for his caps lock!

ONLY one, Jeffrey, actually answered his question {if he understands its meaning}. If not, I hope he comes back for clarification!

The rest of you may just have scared off a new member!!!

Tsk Tsk…

[sigh]

[8-|]

Yeah, there’s quite an echo in here. The piling on is a little off-putting, I suppose, but…

A polite suggestion is hardly a “lambaste.” If someone started a conversation F2F and had a booger hanging from one nostril or was sporting an open fly, it would be impolite not to offer the suggestion they may want to wipe or XYZ.

First impressions are important. For a new user, continuing to use all caps will give the impression they are a total boor or, alternatively, just trolling[^o)]. It’s reasonable to point out they may want to check that before people jump to the wrong conclusion about a likely inadvertent lapse of netiquette.

After that, I believe you have a point, G.

Actually, the op is not a new member, he joined over 2 years ago and has made several posts. Since none of his previous posts were in all caps, it is reasonable to believe it was done on purpose.

So a troll post maybe? Walked in, laid one, and left. Hasn’t be back.

Or he wanted to get the attention of the moderators…Maybe he hasn’t been back because he’s at work?

I’ve also seen patterns where members only post during the week which leaves me to believe they may be using a public computer or their computer at work…

ANOTHER FULL MOON !!!

charlie

NOPE, NOT UNTIL ANOTHER WEEK OR SO. MUST BE ALL THE ACCUMULATED FAKE SMOKE IN THE PLACE…IT’S MAKING US ALL BARMY.

Nope! That’ll be on the 17th I believe.

He could’ve just left the caps lock on inadvertently, then. That’s why I kept my comment about it brief, polite, and meant to be helpful in tone. If anyone else had made any comment about it, I would’ve just taken a pass on saying anything.

I don’t think either the OP or the commenters meant badly. It’s just that things sometimes snowball into misunderstandings. That why I always tread very lightly into these sorts of things to begin with. Please don’t take anything I’ve said to take it as a criticism of what anyone did, just an observation of how complex social interaction systems sometimes create problems on their own without human intent. It’s best to be generous in your reaction, because it’s not about blame, but trying to make it work better for everyone.

Oh, oh, Kyle is demonstrating his moderator skills already. [:#]

Cripes, we need a candidate to oppose Kyle in the upcoming Moderator Election. [(-D]

I nominate doctorwayne.

I mean

I NOMINATE DOCTORWAYNE

Thanks for your reply Jeff. I have a lot of respect for your efforts to help us on here, and have carefully read any posts that you have made in my time here. The emails seem to have stopped. Two of them had a Milwaukee connection, the other six wandered quite off the topic and I’d hoped it wouldn’t continue.

I’m a near 70 year old retired teacher, with a life long love of trains, decades of collecting Model Railroader, and a happy collection of HO engines, rolling stock, building kits… I plan a diorama or two in coming months, but no layout.

Thanks again Jeff, and I hope you won’t mind me continuing here for a moment or two.

I never guessed that I would test internet manners with my capital/block letters. I note them in a line above, often caption my pictures with them on Facebook, and finish my emails to my sons with at least “I LOVE YOU”. I’m glad to know of this. The other night, it was a lazy way to get a post away, as I type with one finger. I print many of my diary notes, and notes in cards to friends in block letters, having taught drafting to your sons and daughters for decades.

I get the internet point:) Some of the related posters I’d enjoy meeting one day; a couple of you have me feeling a little thin skinned here, EH, as we say in Canada.

I LOVE TRAINS

Another Canadian, welcome aboard.
