Complete GTW layout on eBay...

I was browsing eBay and stumbled upon this layout for sale:

Look at the roundhouse complex and servicing facility - looks really good.

Most layouts on eBay tend to be rather…lacking, but you’re right, I really love the roundhouse on this one.

He can’t be serious. How the hell do you move that thing? A chainsaw comes to mind. I think its a very nice layout, one I would be proud of. Most layouts like this are dismantled saving all structures and track, but the wood/scenery part is near impossible, unless he designed it to come apart, and from what I’ve seen in the picture and the description, its just not there. Too bad…nice layout. He must be moving…

Even if was built in sections, unless you moved it across town it would cost you another 3k to ship the thing.

Yeah, I think he is serious. I’ve seen a layout about half that size moved that was never designed with disassembly or moving in mind. It actually worked out quite well for the new owner.

I also think this layout’s asking price takes the disassembly and moving into account. If you’ve ever seen the prices for commercially built layouts, you’ll find that $15,000 (yes, fifteen thousand, not fifteen hundred) is not out of line for a well-detailed 4x8.

Steve

Oh, I figured that, $15,000 for a 4X8 easily. I would imagine most spend over $100,000 to have their layout built exactly they way they want it. Money is no object when you’ve got millions sitting around doing nothing, and you decide you’d like a train layout, but don’t want to spend the time building it. I’m sure there are more people doing it this way than you’d think. We have more millionaires in America than ever before.

that’s the biggest layout i’ve seen for sale on ebay , possibly the nicest too as they tend to be kind of crappy . good luck to the buyer moving it !

Wow! That’s a downright decent-looking layout. [tup] I love the look of the yard track, next to the roundhouse. I agree. That’s quite a roundhouse. Seems like a song for $3K. I probably have that just in my 4 x 8. Course, I started pretty much from scratch.

Tom

Well I can say that, I do not think this lay out was ever ment to be moved! It is a great looking lay out, and I agree about the round house it looks awsome.

How could a guy cut that in to sections with out messing everything up?
Sawsall with a 12" blade?
Jig saw? naw the blad is to short.
How about a Lazor? i think that would be to much heat for the foam.
I am stumped on this one. My best thought would be a Sawsall with a 12" or so blade!

I will have to say no matter where I live I think I will always build my lay out’s in sections.

Baker

Heck, the cutting into sections would be the easy part. However, consider all the wire snipping and labelling necessary to have any hopes at all of fully opertional re-assembly! In fact, like nearly all large, well built layouts, there is very little likelihood of being able to move it to a new location and having much survive the journey fully intact…making its actual monetary value almost nil.
