Computer generated Layouts.

Does anyone know a website that offers a downloadable Layout generator[?]

That would be realy helpful for me in trying to figure out the kind of layout I would like to build. Thank you

Brock

try Cadrail.com something like that …it might help

Try Eldorado Software, 3rd Planlt, (www.TrackPlanning.com.) pretty neat software

Atlas, the track people, offer a free one at www.atlasrr.com that you can download. I found it adequate for simple layout design.

Keep in mind that all of these programs will give you a plan, not a blueprint. Somehow, the dimensions never quite work out right, and some things that fit on paper will not fit in nickel-silver. As you start to lay track, your plan will evolve and mature. Still, I think the time I spent with the design program was well worth it, and I would do the same thing again if the railroad space in the family room suddenly got bigger.

These are all layout design software programs.

When you say layout generator, I get the impression you’re looking for something to create a layout design for you, I don’t think you’ll have any luck with software, but there are quite a few folks around who offer custom design services.

Thank you all sorry if I was not clear but yes I was looking for Layout design software.

I like XTrkCad, I cant remember the URL but just search it. Its more advanced and easier to use than the atlas software, and yes, its free!

For XTrkCad try this link.

I used AbraCAData 3D-Railroad Concept & Design. Better than the Atlas freebie but not what I would consider top-of-the-line.

If you do want someone to design a layout for you, I’ll do it for free. My layouts tend to have broad curves, long single track mainlines, large simple yards, and 20 car passing sidings. (I design them in paint!) It does take a little time, though, and since I don’t get paid by how fast I can do it, it could take up to 2 months for a large plan.

just a note that I’ll be mostly away from computers for th next two months, and if you send me specs for a plan, there won’t be lots of progress, so don’t expect results right away.

P.S. I hope that I might see some of you while I’m on vacation, I’ll be the teenager with a black Hoodie with Techtor on the left side, Matthew on the right, and a small yellow dinosaur with a headset on the front. (Techtor=Theatre tech+Actor)

I tried downloading the Atlas program, but it didn’t work in Windows XP…it’s a 16 bit program?

I am a complete neewbie to the train world but the ATLAS freebie enabled me to design a 4’x9’ layout consisting of two concentric ovals, a switching yard with a maintenance complex and a four industry area. I’ll be posting a pix of the layout when I get the hang of posting pix’s in here. Like the others say, somehow the computer layout doesn’t really translate into the actual thingy, but its close enough for practical purposes.

My story was this …from zero idea to the ATLAS freebie to an 18-switch layout capable of offering industries, a switching yard, and continuous running. Not bad for a first try, no?

My experimental layout is allowing me to educate myself enough to desigh my next bigger layout. With the help from all of the great guys in here, of course.

The Atlas program should work fine in XP. Where did you have the problem? I had a heck of a time getting the download, because first you have to “register” and then they send you an e-mail with a link. As I recall, that link had problems with some e-mail programs. Instead of clicking on it, just go to the address bar and type in the URL in the link.

i’ve always had a very hard time with computer aided track plans. I hand draw my track plans with a ruler and track plan template. usually get pretty close.
