For the owners of the new Pioneer Zephyr, how do you like it? I have been eyeballing the set at the LHS, but don’t want to waste my money on something that is potentially a piece of carp.
I had a problem with the motor after an hour or so of running, Con cor sent a new motor over for me and haven’t had a problem since. I installed a TCS decoder for motor and lights and a soundtraxx for a bit of fun.
It runs really smooth and quiet ( apart from the diesel and horn noise [:D][:D] )
Definately not a piece of crap.
TWhite has one too.
Ken.
Tom White just rants and raves about his new Zephyr. I saw one demoed at one of my LHSs and, as Ken already stated, it was smooth and quiet. Very impressive! I’m sure you’ll get a picture out of it from Tom.
Tom
I heard of another person that had an issue Similar to Mac’s, and wanted to see if overall these things are any good. So far they sound like a great deal, and kudos to the customer service at Con-Cor. It is ashame they are going out of business when they are starting to release some seemingly high quality models. At least they are going out in style!!
What price, if you don’t mind at your LHS?
I paid $ 340 plus shipping
Ken.
I haven’t looked at the price, but it should be the same as what Walther’s (Terminal Hobby Shop) would charge. The guys down at the LHS usually give me a 10% break, also. It looks like a great passenger train that I don’t think I would be able to model from the trucks up.
A member of our local HO scale club pre-ordered a Zephyr directly from Con-Cor and paid full retail price for it. Two weeks after he received his, an Ace Hardware store in Tucson, where Con-Cor’s offices are located, had three of them on the shelf for almost $150 less than he paid.
His Zephyr’s motor died after 10 minutes of running. He took it back to Con-Cor and they gave him a replacement, but he hasn’t ran it yet to know whether or not it has the same problem.
Another member of our club has one and it has been running great so far. I put a decoder into it, and it has been running at least 4 hours a week for the past month with no problems.
The most impressive thing about the Con-Cor model is their system of interconnecting all 3 units with electrical plugs so all of the wheels pick up currrent for the interior lights. This keeps the lights glowing steadily even on dirty track, as long as all of the wheels don’t get dirty. It’s just too bad they didn’t do that for the motor pickups.
The Chgo Museum of Science & Industry has a few sets(for replacement parts)
The first set performed under par. The second set, so far, good performer.
I pre-ordered back in May but cancelled in July. I just couldn’t get comfortable
with a thirty day warranty.
There was a MR August review.
Jim Conway the President wants to retire. I’ would think like Stewart, he will find a buyer
when the time comes.
I saw a post a few weeks back suggesting that there may be a second run but since
I’m no longer interested I didn’t call Tucson.
