Concor vs Athearn

In the not so distant past I purchased a concor product and an Athearn product. Both were missing a few pieces. I contacted both via their web sites and both told me they would replace the missing parts. thearn did so in surprisingly fast manner. Concor has not. What have you all seen from these two companies regarding missing parts ?

How long ago are you talking about? You know what they say about the “squeaky wheel”…

In this case there is no verus…Athearn keeps a inventory of parts for everything they make or made in the past…Not sure about ConCor…

What bad luck getting 2 models with parts missing. Any idea how old the models are? DId they come from a reputable dealer? I had a small issue with a Con Cor Pioneer Zephyr model a few years back and they took carre of it without any problems.

I’ll second that. Athearn is still a functioning company, making new products. Con-Cor is a barebones operation at best. I’m an N scaler and Athearn keeps on improving their N scale game every year. Con-Cor, on the other hand, still puts out not-exactly-to-scale junk with Rapido couplers. You can pretty much guess which brand whose products I buy and which one whose products I avoid.

A further note about Con-Cor, The company has been around for a very long time. Certainly in the past they were best known for somewhat low end, cheap models. A lot of this older stuff is still around at trains shows. In more recent years the company has focused on very nicely made, higher end models of name trains like the Pioneer Zephyr and the Turbo train in both HO and N scale. These are far from the junk of old. There was chatter on the various forums a few years back that the owner was planning to retire and that these models are his swan-song.

To illustrate my point I was going to provide a link to the Con Cor web site, but it appears to have been hi-jacked. I hope that this is not the sign of the end of the company as I had been awaiting the release of the new version of the Zephyr with the advertised sound decoder.

To answer your questions. I bought both items from a LHS that went out of buisness. Of course by the time I get around to opening the truck load of stuff I bought I find that these two boxes Athearn , Con Cor. each have missing parts. Athearn of course replace the stuff with in days. Con Cor has taken a month and still not responded. Perhaps I should be a little more persistant.

Seems to be live: http://www.con-cor.com/

A few years ago Con-Cor posted ads about a ‘not quite going out of business sale’, basically saying their owner was retiring and that the operation was going to be cut back to maybe 1/4th of what it was, and then perhaps closing altogether. Those ads haven’t been around for a while now, so apparently they are still going to stay in operation, but maybe at reduced manpower / hours??
