I’m looking for information on the concrete rail tie project being done by Union
Pacific.
I noticed an area west of Lowden, IA on the way home Sunday where they have several pre-fabbed sections of track sitting along the ROW that were assembled with concrete ties. New crossover?
Union Pacific is a very large railroad, I would be willing to bet that they have multiple tie replacements going on right now. Before anyone can answer your question we would need to know which replacement project you are talking about, ie. state, city, track.
They’re close to finished on a stretch of track between Elburn and Cortland, Illinois. One main track was completely rehabbed with concrete ties. East of Elburn is where the main line was enlarged to three tracks for an extension of the Metra route (don’t know when exactly that will occur), but everything between Peck and Elburn appears to be concrete, too (I’d better check on that).
I once heard that the ties were failing somewhere, like cracking and stuff. A few months ago they replaced the ones along the denver pueblo koint line and i know it was UP that did the work not BNSF
