Confused about painting track

Hi folks,
After reading the answers on a current thread, I have a few questions.

  1. do you spray the ties and roadbed with a color, then bru***he rail webs?
  2. is this done before ballasting?
  3. will the tie spray gum up the turnout points?
    Thanks,
    BB

Look at this excellent tutorial by Joe Fugate:

Do it all in one sweep, Bruce, if you are using an airbrush. If by hand and brush, do the ties, then the rails. The jury seems to be divided between doing it all before or after ballasting. I am now leaning to doing any ties prior, and rails after, ballasting. That way, you can leak a bit of rail rust and grime onto the plates and ties, even the ballast, as it will do naturally.

The points won’t gum up if you usefine sandpaper or a knife edge to remove paint where the rails must move. I would apply purpose-cut painters tape over the iffy spots, and do them by hand later.
