I have a pure Lionel O-27 layout (16 x 12) that has Lionel 042 switches on. My Lionel trains run just fine on it. Recently I purchased a MTH Premier Diesel Passenger set and the MTH absolutely hates the Lionel switches. They stall the train everytime the train passes over. I have cleaned the switches but after 3 passes back to stalling. So I have decided to build an additional outside track around the layout just for the MTH train.
I was going to build the new track with MTH RealTrax and 054 switches. After reading many topics on this I am now confused if using RealTrax and MTH switches is a good idea. Anyone with a solid opinion if I am heading in the right direction?
I have MTH realtrax on my permanent layout. It seems a little quiter than Lionel fastrak. Lionel is more robust, the MTH sometimes does not make contact between two pieces of track and then I have to run a jumper between the two pieces.
I have tubular K-line snaptrack running around the outside of my 027 layout. It does not have a built in roadbed but does have a lot of ties. It can be cut in half to make a transition to O track (or 027 with shims). The best part is it can get very affordable when purchased on sale at Hobby Lobby and comes with any K-line sets I buy (for the cars).
