Is conrail better than short lines or beating short lines to new customers???
Huh? The only Conrail that’s left is those areas in which CSX and NS couldn’t split things up enough to have competing routes.
Actually, the old Conrail was usually not all that friendly to new customers, they seemed to have the “big railroad mentality” that if a certain type of freight wasn’t profitable enough it was chased away. I don’t know that CSX or NS are doing things all that much better, but I would much rather see shortline or regional ways of looking at customers.
could conrail company become a short line railroad ??? If that ever happend.
Maybe that is the master plan…picture this…Conrail become such a great shortline and they start to get more locomotives and more rolling stock and more business and more and more…ringggggggg…what? Oh, I was dreaming, that happens sometimes. Back to reality, no, I don’t that could happen becase there is no such thing as Conrail, just shared assets of the former great railroad.
No.

Why do you think they called them CONRAIL? Because they were a buncha con artists…
The remaining part of Conrail does not do any marketing or sales. Their owners (CSX and NS) compete for traffic in the Shared Asset Areas. Conrail just moves it for them.
I would hardly consider Conrail to be a bunch of con artists. After all, they did manage to make a silk purse from the sow’s ear of Eastern railroading.
Conrail as it is currently constituted is basically a spread out terminal operator, not a whole lot different in concept than BRC, TRRA or PTRA.
Ho 'well… With the way poor John Snow got snookered into what he thought was a merger of equals with Conrail, only to discover too late that what was at hand was a covert attempt by the Cons to absorb CSX…good thing that he was able to partner with NS and usurp the usurpers, and stave off the planned annihilation.
