Why not back to Erie? Wasn’t Conrail a bailout corp?
It was never in Erie colors. It was built for Erie Lackawanna. And it is the Conrail Historical Society that is doing the work.
The PC had the worst cabooses…Reading, Norfolk, were nice. LV the same as PC. Erie were so-so…Lackwanna’s were something you hoped wasn’t on the end of your train.
OLD CABOOSES NEVER DIE…THEY JUST MOVE AROUND A BIT!
“Wasn’t Conrail a bailout corp?”
Why must so many comments on internet sites be needlessly snarky?
While we’re at it, what’s wrong with celebrating our shared history - “bailout” or no?
Sad, sad, sad.
Conrail was a creation of the federal government in an effort to revive railroading in the Northeastern U.S. In 1987 the federal government sold its interest in Conrail in what was, to that time, the largest single day offering in the history of the U.S. stock exchange. The rest of Conrail’s history is a success story…one of the few that any governmental creation in the United states has ever enjoyed. Conrail turned out to be one of the best investments of time, labor and money of the 20th Century.
I had viewed the two Conrail cabooses on the front yard of the house in Sands Point, Long Island. It and another caboose were painted in Conrail colors and sat on two pieces of sectional track with a dinky that pulled them back and forth. I heard the owner had a fantastic collection of RR memorabilia in the house but he never worked for a RR. [that’s what I heard]
The nearest RR siding was the LIRR Port Washington RR station which was about 2 miles away.
