Conrail engine confusion

two days ago I saw a Conrail Dash 8 series engine. I think I may have seen B32-8, or a D8-40-C

Dash 8s on Conrail’s roster:

C32-8

C39-8

(both early body style)

B40-8

C40-8

(traditional Dash 8s)

C40-8W

(what GE called Dash8-40CW)

The C32-8 was pretty unique, not sure there was a 4 axle version. As with many GEs, they largely made their home on the Boston & Albany.

NS has a fleet of B32-8’s, 3522-3566. http://www.nsdash9.com/rosters/3522.html

BN had 3, 5497-5499. http://www.trainpix.com/BN/GE/B32-8/INDEX.HTM

I didn’t know thjey would look like that… you couldn’t tell them apart from a -840B. I wonder if they’re rebuilds…?[%-)]

B32-8s are original. They are also backwards (set up long hood forward). They wre being used around here for Jersey intermodal, but they have since disappeared. Every once in a while you see one being used for a yard switcher.

The conrail engine was probably a C40-8 or B40-8. (I think NS sold or traded their share of B40-8s to CSX a while back). They’re still out and about. C39-8s on NS keep going into storage (but every once in awhile they bounce a couple out for service).

wait, it was 6 axle, so it would not be a B-prefix.
Thanks.
