OH yeah we miss Conrail…sorry but CSX just isn’t the same. Conrail was our railroad and they were doing well, but of course they had to go didn’t they? You can count me in as a Conrail fan. The tech society is pretty good with info.
What a small world>> I grew up in Elmwood Park, NJ and graduated in Memorial H.S. years back. I attend it St. Ann’s school after class I use to go by the track in broadway. Conrail and NJ Transit. Oh boy!
One school of thought that I’ve read on Conrail is that it was more or less not meant to be permanent…it was formed from several bankrupt railroads and eventually became a profitable outfit…but its breakup allowed increased competition in the Northeast.
…Well…I’m a Pennsy fan from way back in decades. Johnstown, Pa. was my closest contact of the PRR. And of course Conrail had a great amount of Pennsy in it, so must say I looked on Conrail to see it succeed. And it appears it sure finally did that.
Out here, Conrail had a double track east / west line through Muncie. As time passed the equipment seemed to get much better…consistency and good looking much newer power and just seemed like a class one that was doing a bang up job. Lots of traffic passed thru here on Conrail…{an ex. NYC line}.
Now, it’s CSX and to my eyes, not nearly as impressive…Traffic patterns are sure different and maybe a bit less now. I have no figures to quote the comparison but it sure seems less. Don’t know how much passes thru at night.
But memories of Conrail passing by here, in my eyes…they were doing a good job by the appearance of the traffic rolling by.
In N.J. on the Bergen line its a double track. You could watch Local Conrail during the day and also, large traffic of Freights. In the evening its N.J. Transit on the tracks. You have the best of both worlds. But now, you have CSX…[#ditto]
The large freights are gone, and except for the NS (which got this line) local freights and an occasional larger train that comes through at night some time there is only NJTransit. There isn’t even really a through route here anymore as the line after Port Jervis has been sold off and Metro North controls to there. We have to go to the River line to see freights, which is where CSX comes in. And occasionaaly sends a train.
