The Conrail that still exists does so in several small pockets, as Conrail Shared Assets - it handles switching for everyone, kind of like a belt RR. One area is in Detroit and two are in New Jersey.
Google “Conrail Shared Assets” for more information and insight.
This is current Conrail:
Conrail (AAR reporting mark CSAO), officially the Consolidated Rail Corporation, is an American railroad company. It operates three networks - the North Jersey, South Jersey/Philadelphia and Detroit Shared Assets Areas, where it serves as a local carrier and switching company for CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. This arrangement is often referred to as Conrail Shared Assets Operations, the basis of the current reporting mark.
Ya think? I’d guess that one in every 15 locomotives going around Horseshoe Curve these days is dressed in the old Conrail paint – mostly the helpers. We still see Conrail locos in the Chicago area once in awhile, too, as part of shared power on the Class 1s.
At Conrail’s Livernois, River Rouge, and North Yards (Detroit District), there are relatively new (2003) Conrail address signs, plenty of CR M/W vehicles, the dispatcher is “Conrail Detroit Line”, and there is a newer defect detector at Wyandotte announcing Conrail. The local train symbols are Conrail style, YDNY##, YDLV##, and the like.
Of note- one of the locals I saw the other day, YDLV92 (the Windsor job), was referred to as “NS YDLV92” for some reason.
In the first year of CSAO operations, Juniata painted several CR-assigned NS GP38s into Conrail Quality paint (oops). In late 2001, some CR folks placed US flag decals on assigned locos and cabooses. Evidently, neither NS nor CSX liked these small displays of Conrail morale.
they might still be in corail paint…but they are NOT conrail locomotives… they are owned and opporated by NS or CSX now… just becouse its in conrail paint dosnt mean anything…

I doubt we will see the Class I Conrail around ever, but it would be wise for both CSX and NS to encourage local pride among Conrail Shared Assetts enployees, and they are hurting themselves when they discourage it. Too much of the bad Penn Central red team vs. green team kind of thinking.
hey speaking of conrail paint they painted an engine the spirit of juanita shops(its on the ns portion) well that engine was renumbered 8803 and is on csx
stay safe
Joe
The plan was for Shared Assets to be a temporary thing …5 years. Negotiations did begin on splitting it up, but that was the last I heard of it.
I think one of the strenghts of Conrail (class I) was its ability to railroad in places like northern New Jersey … so much freight in and out, so few and small yards, no place to build more sidings, dense population areas …
They mastered true JIT railroading.
I think CSX and NS may have decided to just leave the situation as it is now, and not risk screwing things up.
Does that mean there still are Conrail painted locomotives in operation somewhere?

csx engineer – Thanks for enlightening us on those details, which seem to be extremely crucial to this discussion. Tell me, do you say “Let’s go to my house” or do you say “Let’s go to a house that I’m living in but is owned by a bank?”
PZ- just MY observation: You kind of come off as a little bit nasty in some of your posts. I’m sure you don’t mean to, so I’ll just presume that it’s my perception, and leave it at that. Living in the center of the country, things Conrail-related are foreign to some of us, that’s why we ask questions. Thanks for the info.[:)]
I see Conrail painted units frequently hear in east Texas. They come by as pooled power with NS and CSX on the old T&P to Dallas. I was in Longview last week and saw a CSX C40-8W in CR paint (not the “Quality”)
