I model the KCS (1981) and I am developing my interchange plans for operating sessions. How would Conrail rolling stock usually travel to and from the KC area, and by what lines? I know that Conrail tracks go to St Louis and Chicago.

Conrail interchanged with ATSF at Chicago and Streator, IL, CNW at Chicago, MP & N&W at St. Louis. Any of them could have delivered cars to Kansas City.
Thanks for the Info. I thought of ATSF in Chicago and maybe MP in St Louis. I wasn’t sure about the others.

The CR/ATSF interchange at Streator was a run through arrangement with entire trains and CR power running all the way to KC and ATSF power running to Elkhart, IN.
In 1981, the Milwaukee Road was still running between Chicago and KC. Didn’t the MILW and KCS share facilities in KC?
I would also think the routing could be influenced by where on Conrail the load originated as to which city and intermediate railroad would be used.

I don’t think the CMSt P&P had trackage to KC. They crossed the Mississippi at Davenport, had some trackage S of ChIcago, and ran N to Sioux City IA (as well as St Paul).
Yes, the MILW had trackage into KC and shared facilities with the KCS. The yard is called Knoche Yard but is also refered to as Joint Agency Yard or Terminal based upon the long standing joint operating agreement between the KCS and MILW. The railroad that took over the MILW trackage (I&MRL) into KC continues to share the yard with the KCS under the terms of the original KCS/MILW agreement.
The MILW line into KC was also shared by the ROCK from north of KC, across the Truman Bridge (Missouri River). After corssing the river, MILW trains entered Knoche Yard via Air Line Junction. ROCK trains continued on KCS tracks to Sheffield Junction to access Kansas City Terminal RR trackage and on to ROCK yards and trackage in the KC area.
I model the KCS in the Kansas City area, including the Joint KCS/MILW operating agreement. I have a hidden staging yard which represents the MILW line into KC. My KCS line runs south into the Ozarks and to another hidden staging yard which represents the KCS trackage south. Kansas City is the nothern terminus for the KCS. I have other hidden staging yards which represent the other KC railroads. I use both KCS and MILW locomotives to switch the yard and KC industries just as the prototypes did.
As the author of this thread, I was wondering which KC rail line should Interchange the bulk of Conrail rolling stock. I have also seen Conrail run through trains in KC but not sure what trackage or run through agreemnt was utilized to get to KC. Thanks to all who responded.
