Rode the Scottish lines this past fall. Clean, friendly, efficient and some of the best scenery in the world.
Amazing that the rails to trails nuts had not taken the route over for the few. It is a delight to know of the resurgence of rail in Scotland. Let’s hope that the line proves economically viable.
I rode the Far North line to Dunrobin Castle last spring beautiful scenery friendly train crew brilliant!!!
Note however back in England there are no plans to reopen the line from Carlisle to Tweedbank it could be a vital link from England to Scotland.
English short sighted thinking at it’s best
When the Waverley route was closed all sorts of promises were made about improving the Borders’ road system. Mostly this did not happen so here we are 45 years later rebuilding a section of line that should not have been closed in the first place. In addition parking in Edinburgh is a nightmare while both Haymarket and Waverley stations are right in the middle of the city - I invariably use the train from Lockerbie (a service up from Manchester Airport) to get to Edinburgh - it takes about an hour and costs me about $18 for a day return. I agree with Mr Fisher that the Scottish railways go through some beautiful scenery, from the Dumfries to Glasgow line up the Nith Valley, through the Inverness line over the Pass of Drumaucter to the West Highland lines from Glasgow to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig. Well worth travelling for their own sake!
