Container Ship Models for N-scale

Hello,

I am looking to add a harbor/port on my N-scale layout expansion and can’t seem to find any manufacturers of roughly N-scale (1/140 to 1/200 ???) plastic container ship models. Anything I have seen is 1/350 scale and most of that is aircraft carriers and destroyers. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Cooperbrad

Cooperbrad, ask around on the Fine Scale Models forum under the ships heading. They may have something.Theres a couple guys in Spokane who scratchbuilt an HO model complete with an interchange yard. They display it regularly at the shows there. Unfortunately I don’t have any Pics. A nice feature of it is the monster smoke unit they put into the stack . I think it is actually some type of water vapor generator as there is never any smell associated with their display.

Doing a Google search on: model container ships resulted in these:

This one is a very small ~1/95 scale model: http://www.rchobby.co.uk/radio_controlled_t_class_conta.htm

I am not sure of the scale of this one, but it is another very small ship. In the picture, the containers are 30 pixels = 40 feet, the ship is 485 pixels = ~633feet, model is 33.8", which works out to be about 1/225 scale. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/neptune.htm

You may want to talk to these guys; the scale is off by a factor of ~8, but you could use one of thier models as a basis of what you want. http://seaveemodels.com/browse_56

And here is an idea for making one out of Legos: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/5622 As noted, the real ship is over 1000 feet long - roughly 6½ feet in N scale.

Check out the links here: http://home.att.net/~ShipModelFAQ/smf-qPaperModels.html It will give you techniques.

You may want to get this model http://www.amazon.com/Tampa-Container-Model-1-550-Imex/dp/B000GKW5LQ even though it is 1:550 scale. It is very inexpensive, and provides you with a model that you could copy into a larger scale.

If you have a LARGE fortune, these guys will be happy to change it into a small fortune and provide you with a model: http://www.bertilewis.com/index.htm

And another 1:1250 model

Are there any museums in your region that have harbor scenes with ships in them, that appear to be N-scale? If so, I would contact them and find out how they acquire their models. [Most of the time I think they are built in-house by an employee…]
