I am currently fitting sound decoders to some my modern diesel power. Does anyone know which Railroads (BNSF, UP, CP, NS) use Leslie 3 or 5 chime, or Nathan 3 or 5 chime. Since most of my models have a 3 chime horn fitted at the factory it appears most locos use the 3 chime.
These two links might get you started. Go to google.com and search for ‘railroad locomotive air horns’.
Most of the new power today comes with a Nathan K3LA. But it’s what the railroad wants. CSX orders there locomotives with Nathan P5s, so they sound like Amtrak com’in through. I know for a fact that BNSF leaves the K3LA on there locomotives from the factory.
You might want to look up the other railways.

I think this will answer your question, it also has fun horns sounds you can listen to.
hope this helps
Not to knit-pick, but amtrak uses K5LAs. CSX uses the K5LAR24 freight varient on virtually all of their engines, except a portion of the ex Conrails. CSX’s ES44DCs are equipped with K5LLAR24s, as are the SD70ACes. They sound like P5s, but aren’t.
