Contract awarded for Colorado depot restoration

I guess a picture would be out of the question. Who, in this day and age would possess a camera?
Your only camera must reside with the proof reader.

Don’t know the quality of work they do, but you gotta like the construction company’s name.

OK, can’t resist: Denver, South Park & Pacific? Got Cartman, Stan, and Kyle on the crew? I agree with Mr. Kelly- a photo would be nice!

The phrase “the former Denver, South Park & Pacific depot at Como, about 20 miles east of Leadville” tickled me. Although Como is that close to Leadville and the destination of the DSP&P was Leadville, that twenty miles was never directly crossed by rails. There’s a little thing called Mosquito Pass (13,185 ft) in the way. Instead, the railroad ran north out of Como, crossed the Continental Divide via Boreas Pass, wandered around Breckenridge, then crossed the Continental Division again at Fremont Pass before finally reaching Leadville. I don’t have the actual mileage for the railroad, but by car it’s about 80 miles if you follow the approximate course of the railroad.

I’m glad to see this as I’d just about given up on the old Como structures. I live just about a mile from the old DSP&P grade (now Platte Canyon Drive, approximately) and the Union Pacific still has a mineral rights easement through my property stemming from their ownership of the DL&G in the 1880s.

Fantastic news! When is the completion date?

That’s great about the depot; maybe the Como roundhouse next?

I was just there this past weekend (July 7th) and got a brief tour from David at the hotel/B&B. I am very impressed with the quality of the work being done. The folks at Older Than Dirt Construction are building a great reputation in this type of restoration work. In fact they are restoring a historic homestead in Poncha Springs which is just a couple hundred feet from the old DRGW NG line to the Monarch Mine. The roundhouse has had some restoration work done to it and hopes are that eventually it will be included in a well if not full restoration that will be part of a “destination” museum complex for railfans. Even now it’s worth going to see it.
