Do I need to use a heat sink on the rectifier?
It depends. I’d say maybe wire it up, run it as you would, and see if it’s getting excessively hot. Make sure that you use a rectifier that’s rated at or above the amount of current your locomotive’s motor will draw under your typical usage.
