Does anyone know if it is difficult or even possible to convert the Atlas RSD 4 , 6 wheeled trucks , to a standard RS 3 4 wheeled truck set ? Any help will be appreciated .
Hi Carknocker,
I don’t know about “N” but for “HO” it’s a fairly easy conversion, you need a couple of sets of four wheel trucks from either a RS 1, 2, or 11. Go to the Atlas site, HO locomotive parts, to order the parts, they also have diagrams of different locos. Outside of the minor wiring, the trucks are a clean swap. You might even find the trucks at a train show or a parts bin.
Hope I helped, Den.
Are we talking HO or N scale? And is the engine an early Atlas/Kato engine? Atlas has HO RS3 power trucks for $8.50 each, and the RS3 frame for $10.00(plus shipping). You are talking about $30-35 in parts alone - you might be able to pick up used RS3 for that price. You might be able to use the rSD4/5 frame if the mounting is the same(and drive shaft length…).

Yep, an easy swap.
2 trucks part no. 9845300. The old worm & worm cover will fit the new trucks. If you want new worms you will need: 2 worm covers part no. 9845304
2 worms part no.9707305
4 bearings part no. 9850317
2 thrust washers no.9707312
You don’t need to change the frame or anything else. These trucks are also used on the RS11, C424/5, maybe some others. The RS1 uses a different truck with a different mount.
Have fun.
Jim
If the loco is HO scale, I have two pairs of Atlas RS-3 trucks I’m willing to get rid of.
Thanks for your help , I am planning on going to a train show real soon , so I will look for a used set .
It works the other way as well. I used some old yellow box RSD trucks, so I needed to add to the wires, to get them somewhere near the board. The mechanical parts directly interchange.
