Cookie Cutter Layout With Foam Sub-Roadbed?

I’m building an HO layout. It has L girder benchwork. For the most part it will be 1/2" plywood with 1" pink foam glued on top. Most of the layout will be flat but there are a few areas where the track will be elevated. I want to use the cookie cutter method in these areas.

My question is: Do I just cut the foam to the same shape I cut the plywood, glue it down and support the elevated area in the normal L girder fashion (wooden support beams)? Or should I be using something else for sub-roadbed on the elevated areas?

Thanks,

Bill

Why use foam at all on the elevated sections? Just lay the road bed on the plywood and use foam for scenery in the open areas.

Art,

Are you saying glue the cork roadbed directly to the plywood with nothing in between?

Bill

Bill, That’s what I did. I am interested in what some other people might ad to this. Foam makes great mountains. It makes a great table top instead of plywood, especially if weight is an issue.
