Cornerstone Modulars

Has anyone noticed that the prices on the Walthers Cornerstone Modular pieces are really, really low in the latest catalog? Each of the packages, normally $10, is now on sale for $3. You can’t buy real-world foreclosed real estate for a discount like that.

Has anyone built anything with these pieces? Any recommendations for how to use them? I have absolutely no room on my layout, but I’m thinking of stocking up in anticipation of building an extension in a couple of years.

I started off by using the little Modular Blisters. The building got expensive because only 4 blank walls were included. Then other critical parts such as roofing parts etc are few in number. All the buildings I have built always had a additional order for MORE, always more. I estimate I sunk about roughly 600 dollars into the modular system. But I feel that it’s a good expense because I have a industry I can live with with my own design. So the system works. But this expense was spread over years.

I started saving money by buying the Sterling dairy and tannery kit and treated the things as one giant parts box capable of building anything up to the limits of my work table.

That was a few years ago. Last week I raised up the final structure using these Modulars and threw away two garbage bags full of spares, extras and sprues resulting from about two sterling kits, 4 Tannery boxes plus dozens of additional purchases along the way. I did take advantage of the sales. So instead of 170- or whatever I tried to stay about 120 or less with the sales.

Now I did notice the sales are REALLY cheap. I might buy a few more 3n1’s or whatever to stock up towards one or two future structures I know that will be built.

The biggest problem is the two different colors of plastic they used to make the modulars. If you intent to paint the building, no problem. But to leave the basic color and find that the posts are a shade darker or lighter causing the building to require weathering to blend… well were having fun.

I have posted about this system in the past. I leave you with some thoughts.

Buy bulk.

Buy Low prices. 3 bucks vs 10 bucks is a very good catch.

Plan your builds.

Keep a box of spares until are finished with the system. My spares box grew to about 2 foot high, 4 foot long and two wide.

I saw the December flyer yesterday at my LHS and noticed that the Modular price had been increased to $3.98 per unit. If you go to Walthers web page, you’ll see they are presently listed at $2.98. I have placed an order with my LHS to stock up for future builds on my layout. Here’s a link to Walthers:

MrB,

I am currently making background buildings which are kitbashed from a 3-n-1 kit. I purchased the modulars to complete the building. Too bad that I paid full price for the extra modular packages.

When I get it painted, I will share the structure.
