Cost of Building Bike Trails GOING UP...almost as much as relaying track

Now just 250,000 to 500,000 a Mile… The cost of Asphalut is going up due to Oil Costs not to mention the cost of fuel for construction equipment… This is is according to "Clark County Parks and Trails out of Springfield OH which has built and runs about 50 miles of trails of former railroad lines…

The 500,000 is with bridges…

That’s nothing. The partially completed bike trail between Moscow ID and Arrow Junction ID (built over the ROW of the ex-NP’s P&L branch) has so far cost 10 times ($25 million) what it would have cost ($2.5 million) to simply repair the railroad’s flood damage back in 1998.

Asphalt on a hiking trail??? why not install escalators or moving sidewalks??? I have never seen an old ROW trail that was not built and maintained by volunteers, where is this money coming from ?? If you get the land for nothing, simply shanghai the users as volunteers and demand they maintain the trail or they lose it, it’s about time people give back to society instead of demanding millions of dollars so they can have good times racing down the good old ROW.

tatans:

…Why not asphat…Our almost 30 miles {total, continous miles}, of Cardinal Greenway Trail both ways out of Muncie is very nicely graded from the original C&O ROW and paved very smoothly.

It is widely used by walkers, and bikers from locals and from a wide radius of the population.

Money was a combination of State grants and local money to purchase the ROW and construction.

Our local C&O depot was beautifully brought back to life and is now a Trail Head and with railroad artifacts on display inside plus Trail offices, etc…

Our Trail is a real asset to our community.
