Cost Of Double Tracking A Line

I’m doing this from memory, but I believe that the Fox River bridge piers are wide enough for a third track. Whether they can take the weight loading is another question.

John Timm

The Fox River bridge’s piers are actually wide enough for four tracks, and the existing two are toward the north ends of those piers. I would think that the weight of one more track would not be a problem.

It has been posted elsewhere that UP 's new track center standard (used on the triple tracking in Nebraska, but applicable here?) would require a new bridge which a poster that claims to be “in the know” says is in the works here as well.

I think Timm was thinking of the weight of two trains.

That’s not only a UP rule, but an FRA standard as well which trumps state laws.
