Cost of MR magazine

So why is it that Model Railroader costs 30% more in Canada when our dollar is 5% higher. Just doesn’t seem right.

Cost of the dog food for the dogs that pull the sleds to deliver the mail ???

I 'd bet it has to do with mailing costs

Postage costs are pretty much the same, but I don’t think they mail to the retail outlets that sell them.

Taxes. How’s your free health care? [;)][:-^]

Today magazines and other stuff are now at par, by law.

HMMMMM, you mean no one in the U.S. pays ANY taxes???

They like to call them fees! That way the ‘taxes’ don’t go up.[:D]

On this evenings’ TV news, a report that Wal-Mart in Canada will be pricing magazines, books and greeting cards at US prices. So that would be a great place to buy MR! I imagine others will have to follow to be competitive.

I heard that this evening also, but they said that wal mart is lowering the prices to the customer but the publishers haven’t lowered the price to Walmart.Small retailers can’t afford to lower their prices.

But has anyone seen an issue of MR at Wal Mart?? I know mine doesn’t carry it.

I wonder if the price difference has something to do with NAFTA?

I went to my LHS and although they have lowered some of their items to reflect the soaring Canadian Dollar.

He was not willing to drop the price on the two Undec Kato locomotives I bought because he got them when the US dollar was higher. It was considered old stock.

For your information - we have four seasons like everyone else in North America. In fact, I live in Southern Ontario which if you draw a straight line east from Calfornia. Do they have dog sleds in CA. ? And before anyone else chimes in - the references to igloos and dogsleds really perturbs me - if you can’t tell.

Gee, and here I thought we Canucks had pretty thick skins being up around all them igloos and such…oh well… [(-D]

I’ve noticed that prices are quick to rise when something happens, but slow to fall when the opposite occurs. Like gas - price of oil goes up, it’s at the pump immediately; when it falls we get a load of guff about in the pipeline, etc. and it takes weeks to fall. I see it’s the same up north with the exchange rate.

Enjoy

I live across the lake on the shores of Lake Erie , I think we have the igloo’s and dog’s your talking about. We get the lake effect storms.

I am a suscriber to MR and renewed this past summer for about $50. US, price charged to Canadians for one year, plus some money for exchange and a money order. If you look at the 2008 sweepstakes entry form in the Dec. issue it states renew for $42.95, but look at the bottom of the card and you see, Canadian price $61.50 in US funds, GST included (6% goods and services tax). That makes it $58. US. before tax, a $15.05 difference. The consolation is our Canadian dollar is getting closer to the point of matching the GST on exchange. So does it cost MR $15.00 more to sent it to Canada every year? Maybe it does. I like the content, so for now I pay the price. I evaluate my choice every summer.

I have!! At least 1 of 3 Walmarts in the area (I haven’t really looked at the others) now carries Model Railroader Magazine. They also carry RMC magazine.

Mine doesn’t.[:(]My grocery store(Krogers) does. They get the special issues too.

Can’t you folks up in Canada get deals like this through the internet?
