Cost of MR magazine

I just emailed them to see if they ship to Canada. All of the Walmarts I have been to in Winnipeg sell MR and some sell RMC also.Best deal still is at our club. $0.25 apiece for back issues. 20 bucks worth keeps me busy all winter when the snow piles up to high to take the huskies for a run to the hobby igloo.

Hey Crandell, don’t all you hosers know the McKenzie brothers, eh? [;)]

Just kidding!

I have great respect for our neighbors in the Great White North. I remember clearly a warm welcome on a very cold March night when my military rotator from Bosnia made an unscheduled midnight stop at Gander. They opened up the stores for us and gave us drinks. They treated us American airmen and soldiers like family!

Canada is cool!

Not if you follow a constant lattitude unless you live in the lake and even then it’s a bit of a stretch. BTW: I don’t think anyone was trying to insult you. They were just having some fun.

I don’t care for the prices of any of the modelling mags, MR, MRC, FSM, they’re all too high. The yearly subscription is a better deal if you want to go that way, me, I wait and pick them up for free, my LHS guy puts the issues that didn’t sell [if there are any] in a ‘‘community’’ box, free for whoever wants them, and patrons bring in old issues and toss them in, on any given day there might be last months MR and RMC in the box, along with Mainline Modeller and CTC mags from years ago! Some of those old mags have excellent drawings for structures and info sheets for locos\rolling stock, I never walk out of there without at least a couple mags to read.

Must be nice! My (not so) LHS sells 10 year old issues for $2.50-$3.50/each.[V]

I think it has something to do with the fact that you have more trees than we do and the environmentalists don’t want us shipping more trees to you in the form of paper![(-D]

You are both lucky. My closest LHS, which is 300 miles from here, charges 15 bucks for old MR.

I think that 2,50 is actually quite a nice price for old magazines.

I agree, it is very nice that folks ‘‘donate’’ their old issues of modelling magazines, it’s not a given that you’ll find the last months issue of MR or RMC in the box, he doesn’t always have extras, but if you miss an issue or two it’ll show up in a few months, and I sure don’t mind reading a 4 month old MR or RMC! I have some Mainline Modeller amd Prototype Modeller mags from the 70’s! There’s articles about the ‘‘new Bowser’’ and ‘‘new TYCO’’ offerings …fun to read, and there are some good articles on scratchbuilding, it’s fun to look at the layouts and scratchbuilt equipment those guys made, back when there wasn’t a million products availible at the touch of a keyboard! LOL

I suppose my LHS guy isn’t worried about making a killing on everything, he’s even got a ‘‘parts’’ box with odds and ends in it for those looking for a fix-it part for their older locos or rolling stock…and he never charges for anything in the box.

Four seasons? Who are you kidding?

We replaced our igloo last year with a wooden shack (yay!), but our dogsled has been a right nuisance lately. The dogsled has been in the shop since last Wednesday, which is a real pain as it is a 4 km trek through 3 m snow drifts to get to our mail box. I’ll have to borrow my neighbour’s Skidoo when I need to do some shopping, and as he is 10 km away it is a serious schlep to get to the local trading post. We’re starting to run low on polar bear steaks, so I’ll have to go soon.

I can’t wait for July when it will be above zero for five hours.

Aaaah, you all live down under. [:D]

Soon my train room will be snowed in for the winther and I won’t have access to it until the snow goes away around April. The southern part of Sweden is still north of all of you. And I live in the middle of Sweden. Which is pretty much north of everything in the world.

So if you excuse me, I’m going to get my dogs now because I’m going to build an Igloo for them so they have somewhere to live during the winther! [:D]

Peace to everyone, be they in an igloo or in a mansion.

The fastest way to get Wal-Mart to sell Model Railroader is to start the rumor it’s printed in China using lead-based ink.

The weather man is talking snow next week, its a good thing I drive a 4X4 truck or I wouldn’t be able to get around town. I subscribe to a few car magazines and get them for 24 dollars Canadian. Every year one of the schools has a magazine selling promotion and I buy them from the kids. A Hot Rod mag sells for 5 bucks up here so I’m saving a fair bit of money off the newstand price. As for MR I use to browse through it at the grocery store and buy the issue if something interested me. Lately though, since the Editor change I find every issue great and I’ve been buying them at my LHS. It gives me a reason to go in every month to browse around. You got to support your LHS and I really don’t mind paying a few dollars more for something knowing the LHS will be there next week or even next year.

  1. the price on the magazine is not set based on the current exchange rate , it’s set at some unknown interval . otherwise it would be different every month and it wouldn’t be $X.95

  2. it’s more expensive to mail it to canada ? magazines only get mailed here if you subscribe , if you buy them at a store they come from a local distributor who buys in bulk and resells to many stores . they probably ship them by truck

  3. it’s more expensive to mail it to canada ? why , is it more expensive to subscribe from alaska or hawaii ?

  4. many things sold in canada are higher priced in canada than they are in the US , even above the exchange rate as we’ve heard recently on our local news . a car that sells in the US for $10k and should sell in canada for $12k based on the exchange rate actually sells here for $14k . somebody is making some extra money of us canadians . (note:dollar amounts are made up as an example only)

basically what happened is we got used to paying higher prices than in the US when our dollar was low , about 75 cents US was equal to $1 canadian , and the prices have reflected that ever since

This talk about Canadian weather is silly. Of course they have seasons.
Let’s see, there is the Cold Season, the Very Cold Season, the Damn it’s cold Season(sometimes abreviated to Damn cold season) and the Holy, You know what, It’s Cold Season.

Yep that’s four. I belive these are the same in Sweden. [(-D]

Just kidding but a year’s subscribtion to MR for $21 is a [wow]. That’s cheaper than getting it from Kalmbach. Unfortunately I think I just renewed my subscribtion. [sigh]

WOW!!! Thanks for the link Loathar, my sub is about to run out. [:D][;)][8D]

You’ve got to be careful with those el cheapo subscription mills. A local friend was bragging about how he got MR for 20-some bucks, but then he only received about 8 out of 12 issues. MR itself can’t help him, because these are unauthorized resellers. He’s back to official subscriptions now.

It almost seems like some of these cheap resellers spread the issues around so everybody receives some, but not all, the issues they contracted for to save money.

There are only two seasons in Canada: Winter and Construction.

IF the Canadian dollar is worth $1.06(today) to the U.S.$, that means if we pay the “American” price, we are getting screwed, do people not understand how money works?? This means we (In Canada) will pay 6 cents less than the American price on every dollar we spend.(Because the Canadian dollar is worth more than the American dollar) If the price of a magazine is $5.00 U.S. then in Canada we pay only $4.70 CDN. I just bought a money order for the U.S. for $20.00u.s. and I paid $18.80cdn. So now you know how it works, And Johnny Canuck figured he was getting a good deal as he was losing money. By the way do you know what an optimist is in Canada??? He’s a guy that goes out and scrapes all the ice off his car windows before he tries to start his car. 10 months of winter and 2 months of poor sledding, don’t you love it eh?

Here in Ireland we pay around 20 US dollars for a MR magazine! the retailer says its too do with the shipping, but it really is more to do with Ireland having some of the greediest businesses in the world (proven fact). My LHS sells tiny tubs of sand for scenery for €7.50/$11! Imagine paying $11 for a cupful of sand straight from the beach, packed into an old yogurt pot with the label taken off. small sheets of styrene? $20. the cheapest loco he sells (a simple hornby 0-4-0 that you get free with subscriptions to the hornby collector magazine)? $150.

Long story short, be thankful for the prices you pay in the US, it gets a lot worse.
