on hi-speed and commuter rail? That amount would have gone a loooong way
I’m sure it would have gone a long way, but I don’t think the idea of a tunnel is as unsound as the tunnel itself seems to be.
There was an argument that the project should have included a rail line providing a direct connection between North and South Stations–if it had been, maybe the trains using it would be beset with the same problems as the cars.
…Isn’t that scary…Hearing that news of recent reporting, I’m sure glad my daily driving is not through that arrangement. Believe the last I heard of it at least one of the tunnels is closed for the foreseeable future. And I believe the original route up on grade through the city has been or is in the process of being dismantled…So that’s probably not an option.
That construction price is just about the same as the cost to build the Chunnel across and under the English Channel…!
I believe the Boston Big Dig did not include any new rail provisions across the area…One would think if any improvements were needed that would have certainly been the time to include them…
Whatever…It sounds like it really has “big dig” troubles now…
That really sounds scary…4 or 6" thick concrete panels in the tunnel ceiling that are questionably fastened…Wow…!
…And yes, Carl…I’ve seen that discussed several places of the mention of connecting the north and south stations…Don’t know enough about the specifics to comment but if it was a natural and needed it’s too bad it wasn’t done. Of course…a route that the ceiling would stay intact…

The link between North and South stations had this one problem-It would have been convenient,believe it or not! But since Boston is the hub of the universe–LET’S GO RED SOX!!(When all else fails invoke the Sox.) Amtrak has made so many friends up there, it was never gonna get a cent from this leaky pork barrel of trouble!
…better spent selling the Red Sox to Canada? [}:)]
I don’t know if it would be better spent on commuter trains, but I sure know I could spend it better! [:D]
