bought this little teakettle at our swapmeet yesterday ,no original box but owner said it was an MDC model, has knuckle couplers (not KD) and the connection between engine and tender is a new plug style. could it also be a Model Power? .
MDC old time 2-6-0 with the 51’ drivers from the 2-8-0. I believe it was released in this form late in MDC’s life and by Horizon/Athearn after the purchase.
I don’t think this is an MDC model. MDC wheels where brass, and not bright plated. I think it is an Mantua Mogul.
It is an MDC/Roundhouse/Athearn model. They improved the drivers, motors, electrical pick up and connections after Athearn took over and have nickel silver plated wheels.
It’s definitely an MDC/Roundhouse model. They started using plated wheels and Sagami can motors in the 90s or so. It doesn’t have the high quality detail parts or blackened handrails and stanchions like the later Athearn version, so I’d say it’s an assembled 90s production kit.
Late MDC.
It sure is a pretty little thing.
Excellent buying.

I went to Athearn’s website and you guys are correct, it is a newer Roundhouse loco. The drivers don’t look like they’re the same size; but, what the hay.
Pre DCC. Probably late 1990s, maybe into 2000 a little. This should be the diagram with 51 inch drivers but probably older than your loco but should be close.

I have the Athearn/Roundhouse 2-6-0 with DCC and sound and they have a six wire connection between the tender and loco. The connector is inside the tender and plugs into the DCC PC board. No water barrel. 63 inch drivers. A newer open frame motor half the size of the older open frame motors. An added flywheel makes it the size of the old open frame motor.
My two MDC/Roundhouse with Wild West livery is pre DCC and has a single wire between the tender and loco with a water barrel on the tender. Still have the loco diagrams. They also have the new motor like the Athearn ones but have a flywheel so the motor flywhell combo are the size of the old open frame motors.
All three Roundhouse types, 4-4-0, 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 are all identical in size. Parts from Athearn fit the older MDC types.
I do remember reading that Roundhouse was going to China in the late 1990s and was starting to sell locos with non sound DCC in the tender. Never did see one.

Wish to thank all for your knowledgable input. after running on my test track find its a sweet running little engine with good slow speed control with no stalling or hesitation,
looking forward to detailing and painting along with possibly adding DCC with sound.
Adding sound will depend on the tender frame.
The older tenders had a frame with good size weight.
No idea how this will work with the low driver loco.
The part numbers can be seen at the HO Seeker MDC website. I sent in scans of the diagrams to him.
Athearn did sell parts that fit the older shells with a speaker hole for 28mm speaker. I bought three along with the tender trucks that have all wheel pickups.

A LokSound or Tsunami Micro would work. I used the light steam Tsunami Micro.
I hardwired them. Use a 1 k resistor if yours has a LED.
Rich
For sound that was my thought a Tsunami 750, hope to get this done so to be able to doublehead it with this Bachmann sound value Mogul i just redid
The 750 should work. I used them in all my Roundhouse locos and a couple smaller Bachmann steamers.
I suspect this is what the motor looks like.
The older style motor was the length of this motor with flywheel and drew more current.
Rich
The tender shell did fit the new frame but I am not sure Athearn sells the parts anymore. The steamers have been out of production for some time.
