Coupler Conversion

I want to replace the couplers on an old Atlas N scale set so that the cars will be compatible with my Bachman train. The Atlas set are rapido (square looking) and the Bachman are knuckle type.

From looking at the Atlas cars it looks as though i will have to replace the trucks also.

Am I correct in this?

What type / brand of coupler should I go with?

Thanks

Thanks for asking, daff.

I’ll need to do this on several new-to-me cars, so I’ll be following intently.

For my N scale cars with truck mounted couplers I have used Micro Trains trucks with couplers on them. If you are going for body mounted couplers, I think they have those too. They also have a conversion chart so that you can convert locos.

Good luck,

Richard

Should find out more tomorrow. Taking them over to the local train store for some suggestions. All the cars with the exception of the caboose are truck mounted rapido’s, The caboose is body mounted.

Richard,

Do you have any experience with the magnet couplers?

I found this series of conversion guides at Micro-Trains.

Went to my train guy today and took cars with me.

Wound up having to replace the trucks to be able to go with knuckle couplers and was able to change out coupler only on the caboose since it was body mounted.

And yes they were Micro Train couplers

yep Micro train lines trucks and couplers are great! I’ve been slowly making the transition over to MTL’s, are your loco’s equipped.

Nope…but soon will be…in the process

hahah yep I hear ya there, got lots of cars to swap.

daff,

Haven’t used magnetic uncouplers as my wife’s N scale got buried under returning son’s stuff when he came home. Haven’t gotten my planned traveling N layout far enough along to try.

To this point haven’t used them in HO either. So far it’s the bamboo skewer method. New layout may get some out of the drawer, haven’t gotten that far yet.

Have fun,

Richard
