coupler has too much up and down play

I recently purchased a bachmann spectrum passenger HO train set. I am new to the hobby and I am seeking some help with a coupler problem. It seems that the coupler is loose or something, causing it to pop up over the other coupler that it is connected to leaving the other cars behind. I tried removing the coupler and reattaching it it to no avail. Can you remove the body and tighten it from inside the car? If so how do you take off the body without breaking it? I sure would appreciate any help I could get with this.

If these are the Bachmann Spectrum passenger cars with the coupler pocket that turns with the trucks, put Kadee #5 couplers on them and shim with a Kadee washer as necessary to take the sag out of the coupler. The Bachmann couplers themselves are not very good at staying together.

Also, since you’re new to the hobby, I have to ask, are you using the Kadee Coupler Height Gauge to check the coupler height?

As Cacole said, the Bachmann’s with the swivel coupler are notorious for allowing vertical play in the coupler pocket, causing the problem you state. I removed them and body mounted the couplers on my passenger cars.
