Coupler Question

I have quite a few engines. Atlas and Kato and some are already equipped with couplers. can someone eductate me as to which couplers I need to install on my engines? I see that there are obviously different specific numbers for certain couplers etc. For me-being that I am just getting back into all this…from years ago, I need to freshen up a bit. Thanks in advance…John

Kadee has an HO conversion list here http://kadee.com/conv/holist.pdf .The #5 and #148 will fit most HO applications. Let us know if you’re dealing with N and/or another scale (Atlas and Kato make locomotives in both N and HO for example).

One thing I like to do is check for prototype photos and see if they are using shelf couplers. If so,Kadee 118 or 119 can be an option too, if HO. Honestly, I’ve tried different brands and keep coming back to Kadee for lots of reason, but mostly because they work reliably, even after years of use.

Consider this: Kadee couplers have a well-earned reputation for not failing in service, ever. I recall a post, one post in over 7 years of being here almost every day, in which a member reported that a Kadee coupler had failed.

He came back later with a retraction.

If you happen to be in N scale, Micro Trains has a conversion chart at their site.

Good luck,

Richard

N scale conversions, if you need a specific one or two from older coupler releases send me a PM and I can help you. when I’m not here or on other sites that I usually frequent. I’m often hunting for a specific locomotive or train that was released prior to my being a Model railroader.
