What kadee coupler do I use on Athern RTR rolling stock and how do I get the existing coupler off the Athern RTR? Thank you.
I’d put in the long shank coupler (#26) especially if it has a snow plow on the front…to replace it, flip the locomotive up side down, take out the small screw in the draft gear box, lift the cover, take out the old, drop in the new (you shouldn’t need the kadee gear box…Athearn’s RTR stuff is finally in specs with Kadee) all you’ll need out of the kadee package is the coupler and the brass spring, ,drop it in, put the lid back on and put the screw back in…some of the RTR stuff has a box cover that slides out towards the front of the locomotive once the screw is removed…chuck
Some Athearn RTR rolling stock have metal clip-on draft box covers that can be removed by slipping a VERY small screwdriver or hobby knife blade along one side until it snaps off.
Kadee’s drop right in.
Also recall some of the newer non blue box RTR cars has screws holding the coupler box cover.[;)] 90% of my Athearn cars use KD#5 10% uses 78s…Both couplers are a drop in fit…You may want to look into the new KD 148 coupler…Its alsoa drop in fit.
