I’m just getting started with this hobby. I have all new Micro-Trains rolling stock, but some of them won’t couple or uncouple properly. How do I fine tune these couplers or do I purchase new couplers?
When you say they won’t uncouple properly, are you using automatic magnetic uncoupling or are you manually uncoupling them?
As far as coupling, I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue with MT’s not coupling properly. The only thing I’ve noticed is that they don’t couple very well on curves. So I only couple on straight track. Could you give an example of a situation where they did not couple properly?
Sometimes I get an MT car with a “stiff” coupler too. I’ve been able to fix them by adding some of that graphite lubricant that Kadee/MT sells, and working them around until they moved freely.

I am using automatic magnetic uncouplers and I only couple or uncouple on straight track. Situation: I will try and uncouple two cars over the magnet, but they never uncouple. Situation: I will try and couple two cars on straight track, but they refuse to couple. I am getting to the point where I feel like throwing all my N scale stuff in the garbage can and go with HO scale. Any help on your part would be greatly appreciated. I’m also running all my locos and cars on Kato Unit-Track.

I don’t use magnetic uncoupling on my layout, but I have used it on others. Are you using an MT magnetic un-coupler or another brand (Kato)? I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but perhaps there might be something about what you are using that someone here might be able to offer some advice on.
The coupling problem on straight track is baffling. “jschuknecht” had a good idea about lubricating them. I’ve never had a need to do this myself… at least not yet. I have had an occasional situation where a coupling didn’t take because one of the couplers was not set in a straight position, but a nudge from a small tool always fixes that situation.
