Covered Coil Car Problem...

Hey guys.

I bought a Walther’s Santa Fe coil car about a year ago at one of the train shops in Houston. Recently I got it out to put in a consist only to find it was warped out of shape for some unknown reason. When I began twisting it back into shape it broke in half, and because it’s made of die-cast metal there was no way I could repair it. So, the only choice I had was to salvage the coil covers and trucks and trash the rest. Any suggestions on what I might do with the covers?. I was thinking I might paint them flat black and put them in one of my black gondolas. That idea came from the fact that I have a gondola with coils in it that the covers fit into perfectly, but I want to be on the right side of things if I do this…

The coil covers do NOT have to match the car color. When the coil is removed from the gons, the covers often do not go back on the same cars they came off. There are probably a lot more covers gons with mismatched covers than matching covers. My [2c]

The irony is that Walthers’ retail shop in Milwaukee has stacks of these cars, painted C&O, for sale cheap – they were left over from an historical society run and are not numbered but are otherwise complete. Obviously saving a couple bucks on the car is not worth the drive to Milwaukee from Houston. But what’s this – the Brewers host the Astros May 30, 31 and June 1 at Miller park…
