I see a lot of covered hoppers when I drive by Newark Airport on the turnpike. I was curious as to their cargo. I understand the tank cars, intermodels & car carries in the area, but I am baffeld by the hoppers.

Lots of businesses around there, if they are air slides, could be plastic pellets, could be cement, chemicals, phosphates for soaps, Colgate- Palmolive is in Jersey City just to the East. Anything that needs weather protection and in bulk.
There are several refineries in the area that produce plastic pellets.
Without an example of reporting marks and numbers, it would be hard to say what you’re seeing. But I’m willing to bet that some of them are for plastics–as Rev. Matt says, they’d be in pellet form. Likely reporting marks would be ECUX, MOBX, MBLX, and XOMX (all owned by ExxonMobil). There are plenty of other possibilities, of course.
Plastic pellets when I used to love in NJ. [:)]

Conrail’s Chemical Coast Secondary (Branch) hugs the NJ Turnpike from just south of Newark’s Oak Island Yard (just north of the airport) south to the Perth Amboy area on Raritan Bay. Many chemical facilites in the area. Interchanges with Portside that serves the ex-Exxon refinery in Linden.
Also, the Port Newark yard is along the turnpike, between the airport and the port. At one area of Port Newark, bulk materials are unloaded from freighters via cranes with buckets. I never could get close to the area, but I would see mountains of dry goods along the waterfront. Road salt, maybe?

There is so much going on in that area they could be anything. Plastic pellets are a big industry in some areas on NJ. Along there its all about the ports and refineries.
